Music education
Given the good reception of our first volume among schools and teachers, in this second volume we wanted to pay tribute to a Jamaican educational institution without which the music of that small Caribbean island would not have had the strength it has had over the years. We are referring to the Catholic school Alpha Boys School, responsible for the musical education of many of those pioneers of ska, jazz, rock steady and reggae. And what better way to thank him than to do a little history to highlight the importance and depth of his contribution.
The sound of the pioneers finally published
Ska was born from the fertile Jamaican soil, where the traditional sound of mento, the music of big bands (swing, boleros, jazz standards…) and rhythm’n’blues that came through powerful North American stations that radioed from Miami or New Orleans converged.
Pioneers such as Don Drummond, Ernest Ranglin, Val Bennett or the Gaynar brothers gave life to that kind of tropical blues that kicked off the island’s musical industry and became the rhythm of independence from 1962. With this collection of scores you will be able to have, for the first time since they were created, a detailed guide to interpret the music of those pioneers.
